NCCSIA Announces Its 2012 All-State College Division Baseball Team

Hickory, N.C. – The North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) has just released its 2012 All-State College Division Baseball Team.   Mount Olive, which won the Conference Carolinas Regular Season and Tournament Championships and hosted the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Tournament for the second straight year, led the way with six players.  The Trojans finished the year with a record of 44-10.

The starting pitchers on this season’s all-state squad were Mount Olive’s Matt Dillon (pictured) (Trinity, N.C.) and Methodist’s Chris Perry (Cary, N.C.).  Dillon finished the season with a record of 9-2 to go along with a 2.81 earned run average and 66 strikeouts.  Dillon, the 2012 Conference Carolinas Pitcher Of The Year and a first-team all-region pick, also threw 11 complete games and two shutouts to go along with a save.  Perry was the and USA South Pitcher Of The Year after fashioning a 6-2 mark and a 2.14 earned run average.  Perry was also a first-team all-region and honorable mention All-American after finishing third nationally in strikeouts with 132.

The relief pitcher’s spot went to Emilo Pagan (Simpsonville, S.C.) from Belmont Abbey.  Pagan did not allow an earned run all season and led the Conference Carolinas with 13 saves.  Pagan was a first-team all-league and all-region selection.

Catawba Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, N.C.) was named to the all-state team as the designated hitter.  Furr started all 62 games for the Indians this year and finished with 10 home runs and a team-leading 56 runs batted in.  Furr, a first-team all-conference and all-region honoree, led Catawba to a 45-17 record in 2012 and an NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Championship as well.  The Indians also earned their first-ever berth in the College World Series and advanced to the national semifinals.

Three of the four infield spots on the all-state team belong to Mount Olive:  Jermaine Berry (Suffolk, Va.), Mike Mercurio (Brewster, N.Y.) and Jacob Rogers (Clearwater, Fla.).  Berry batted .380 on the year with 54 runs scored and 49 runs batted in while Mercurio finished with a .345 batting average in addition to 63 runs scored and 56 RBI.  Both players earned All-Conference Carolinas and NCAA D-II All-Southeast Region accolades.  Rogers earned all-state laurels for the second straight year after a season in which he batted .392 with 17 home runs, 60 RBI and a national-leading 86 runs scored.  Rogers, the 2012 conference tournament MVP, was also named the league player of the year for the third consecutive season and was the NCBWA D-II Southeast Region Co-Player Of The Year.

The other infielder on the all-state squad was Winston-Salem State’s Aaron Jones (Kernersville, N.C.).  Jones was the CIAA Player Of The Year after finishing with a .465 batting average, 43 runs scored and 57 RBI.  Jones ranked in the top 10 nationally in batting average, on-base percentage (.540) and hits (83) in NCAA Division II.
Wingate leads the outfield selection with Casey Allison (Horse Shoe, N.C.), a Tino Martinez Award semifinalist.  Allison, a first-team All-SAC and all-region honoree, ranked first in the nation in home runs (22) to go along with a .352 batting average and 68 runs batted in.

Rounding out the all-state outfielders are Mount Olive’s Antonio Callaway (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and UNC Pembroke’s Josh Haley (Jackson Springs, Ga.).  Callaway is an all-conference and all-region pick who finished with a .350 batting average to go along with 72 runs scored (third-best in the nation) and 51 runs batted in.  An outstanding student as well, Callaway was named the 2012 Conference Carolinas Scholar-Athlete Of The Year.  Haley, meanwhile, was also a first-team all-conference and All-Southeast Region pick who led the Braves with a .391 batting average and 61 runs scored.  Haley stole 34 bases as well and was an academic all-district honoree.
