Durham, N.C. - On June 22, 2019, the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association held a Summer Workshop for professionals from across the state. Thirty Sports Information personnel from 18 different schools were represented at the meeting that was hosted by Duke University in collaboration with North Carolina Central University.
The day began with the State of the State, an opportunity for each SID to introduce themselves and to give an update on the happenings in their respective schools.
Following the State of the State, was a session on video production and the best practices to follow when directing live events. Chad Lampman, Executive Director of Blue Devil Network, was the presenter for this session and shared helpful hints and tips for how athletic departments can improve and streamline their live broadcasts and video streaming processes.
After Lampman concluded his presentation, three representatives from the Raleigh, Durham, and Charlotte media outlets sat down for a question and answer panel. Steve Wiseman, a Sportswriter for the Herald-Sun/News & Observer, Bridget Condon, a Sports Anchor for ABC11 WTVD, and David Shumate, Director of Broadcasting for Blue Devil IMG Sports Marketing, fielded numerous questions from SID's about the impact social media has had on breaking news stories, the lifespan of print newspapers, and best practices in trying to share interest stories with news outlets.
A facilities tour of the Duke Athletics Complexes followed the lunch break. Staff members of Duke Athletics showed the visiting SID's the production hubs for all their in-game video productions, through the dining facilities, and the famed Cameron Indoor Stadium, home of the Duke Blue Devils basketball programs and Krzyzewskiville. SIDs even got the opportunity to shoot a few baskets on Coach K Court.
The group resumed the workshop with a panel on social media; including trends, use of graphics and videos, and educating student-athletes. Hunter Richardson, the Associate Director of Digital Media/Social Media at Duke, Dana Reynolds, Director of Social and Digital Media at North Carolina, Rebecca Fiorentino, the Associate Director of Blue Devil Network, and Chris Downey, Assistant Director of Creative Services at N.C. State, shared some pointers on how to utilize and improve a school's presence and brand on social media. SID's were able to question the panelists about how to translate analytics and how to make things work more smoothly in smaller offices.
Ask the Veterans was the final panel of the day where SID's got to question Art Chase, the Senior Associate Director of Athletics/External Affairs at Duke, and Kevin Best, the Senior Associate Commissioner of the ACC and former North Carolina SID. During this panel, questions about how the Sports Information field has changed and is changing were asked.
Special thank yous go out to Kyle Serba, Senior Associate Athletics Director for Strategic Communications at North Carolina Central University, Art Chase and Meredith Rieder, of Duke University Athletics, for coordinating a great day of events and all of the guest panelists.
